The "Mother [sister] Earth" debate in Río+20
As you should know the Earth Summit was held some days ago, from June 20th to 22th in Río de Janeiro, Brazil. Only one day after the G20 ends their works in my country.
So, obviating the early and infinite war on concepts and its meaning as the one of green economy or green growth, there was a concept that took us beyond the philosophy and land us in the metaphysics I´m talking about the conception of Earth as mother of all the living creature on it proposed mainly for Bolivia and the rest of the ALBA countries which had an important weight in the G77.
Rene Orellana, the Head of the Bolivian representation share us this very interesting process in which we saw how the cultures and religions are linked with the environment political decisions.
In one hand we have the Arab group countries explaining that we could not talk about "mother" because Allah had created everything. Then the Vatican came in through the Franciscan logic of brotherhood and sisterhood in which the Earth could not been named mother because of the Virgin existence but it could be named as Sister "Mother Earth"as the brother Sun or the sister Moon.
Finally, the concept "Mother Earth" was adopted in the final text and hopefully in the next two years this goal will be accompanied by the recognition of the Earth as a living being and will have rights.

Professor KK Pandey, 12 August 2012In my view mother earth concept is scientific. It gives us immense comfort and pleasure like a mother. We exploit its resources at different levels of our access. It never expects a return like a mother.yet,we pay back to our mother Therefore , mother earth is a symbolic message to engage human being for mutual co -existence,brotherhood,peace,and dedication for good to others.
This forms the basis of our global urban culture.we have to start from city and follow up to a global message.Essenci is that we have to be greatfull to the earth which gives us access under different contexts-city to global.
Mariana Araujo, 23 August 2012Thanks for your comment. Also I think the core of the "mother Earth" concept has to do with to giving to the Earth rights as a living being and go beyond the "nature resources" because just as resources the environment could keeping exploiting and suffer as it does now without any legal effect as in the major part of the countries.
Professor KK Pandey, 24 August 2012This is rightfully needed.I would like to share that in India many deities (Gods/Godesses)have the judicial recognition as living being. Many temples are owned by the God and cases are fought by the trustees on the name of god.
Historically,Earth is one of Godesses ( Devata--meaning the person who helps others) as per Indian mythology.Spiritually also it is beleaved that human body is a mixture of"" Pnch Tatva"' five elements namely (i)Earth(mud) (ii)Air (iii)water (iv)Sky and (v) fire.In this sense earth is already a living being as per indian mythology.
Mariana Araujo, 27 August 2012Thanks Professor, this is a sample of the intercultural dialogue that we must have in aim of our common good in Earth.

Mashallah Ali-Ahyaie, 28 August 2012Dear Professor KK Pandey,
Greetings to Ms. Mariana Araujo and you.
However, this subject doesn't do anything to the urban future, but it may give a hint to mankind caring for the mother earth, as caring for mothers. In this connection, good information are available thereon, as follows (courtesy of Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mother_Earth#Deities_and_concepts.)
