Slow and sustainable cities

As presented in the background document of the WUF 6, the quality of life is seen not as the GDP of the citizens but in a critical dimension, as “the provision and management of high quality public spaces. It will analyze the benefits associated to public spaces in promoting more sustainable development” to make a more friendly and enjoyable city. That is why a slow city (cittaslow) offers to its citizens a good quality of life measured in terms of infrastructure, mobility and transport, health, education, security, enjoy and offer of public space as well as clean air. So today we should focus in recovering the space for people and not for cars so that we can have more sustainable and livable cities at a much more human scale where social interactions takes place and we can enjoy of public space. So, what policies and/or tools should it be implemented to move towards more sustainable and slow cities?

Thank you very much for this comment! Is there anyone in this forum who would like to give their inputs and opinions regarding the feasibility of a slow city?

We have two Carlos there!
I'm not sure about tools and mechanisms to implement slow and sustainable cities. Nevertheless, I would suggest that "Energy and Equity" from Ivan Illich (1973, http://clevercycles.com/energy_and_equity/) as a good source of arguments. I would be pleased to read your opinions. Helena

In my opinion, increasing neighborhood services and reducing within urban trips (to Reduce dependence on technology and cars) can help us to make slow and sustainable spaces and cities.
